Work Experience.
Day 1
June 20th was the first day of Work Experience at Saint John of God Mercy hospital. I had to wake up early around 5:30 am and leave for the train at 6:20 am as the train was scheduled to leave at 6:33 am. I had arrived at Ballarat at 7:42 am. I had then walked my way up to to the hospital which had taken me 20 or so minutes to walk up. I had waited patiently in their lounging area for an hour and 15 minutes I had plenty of time to waste as we started 15 minutes earlier than usual. I was working outback in the kitchen that day and enjoyed every bit of it. I had a man named Russel that was the main chef in the bake-house, that I had been paired with and we had baked and prepared food for the patients and staff to eat.
Day 2
On the 21st of June I was at the sanitation department. I had first had to change my clothes into Surgical uniform, put on a hair net, some gloves and shoe protectors. This day was both exhilarating and disgusting at the same time. We then had a small meeting on all the surgery's that were taking place on the day and what utensils were needed for each surgery. I was then given a tour around the 'office', I was shown which machine was which; drying machine, washing machine, sanitation machine and the 2nd sanitation machine which checked if they were actually sanitized or not. I had sanitized all equipment given to me and put it together in the containers that needed to go to the surgery's and folded it in the specific way that when the surgeons went into open the equipment that would not touch it accidentally with dirty hands. After lunch I went into the rinsing room collected all the equipment used after the surgery's which came down by a mini elevator. We had checked if all the equipment were actually in the basket and on the list then we cleaned away the debris (blood and mucus etc) then put in the washer.q
Day 3
On the 22nd of June I was at the Health Information services down at ground floor. I 'ran' around the wards trying to find files that were misplaced. I then had to organize files and make new folders if the old ones had excess and/or to much information which then had to be merged into 2 or 3. I had then went to the classified section and searched for patients document which were coming in for the day for surgery etc. After lunch I had then had a seminar on what a Health Information Manager actually is required to do and also how to use the software which I then had to use when checking if patients had been dispatched or not and where they are or there file is.
Day 4
On the 23rd of June was a shot day at work experience for me only from 9 am-12 pm. I was scheduled for hydrotherapy that day but then got divided into half hydrotherapy and half Cardiac rehabilitation. I had first been apart of the Cardiac rehab program working alongside them and assisting them if need help. I had also got the chance to stay at their meeting for little while and listen to all their stories and their current situations. I had then gone into hydrotherapy were I interacted with the patients and instructed half the class as we were given an introduction into the classes requirements and then dispatched there own individual routines for the day.
Federation University Excursion Experience.
Federation University was an amazing experience to actually be able to visit the Universities environment and go into the classes and it was also a great insight in the courses available to us. But I personally do not wish to pursue a career in trades when I am older as I saw a lot of that there, which was inconvenient. But I also know I do not want to go to this University as it is too far and it does not have a strong medical field at the Uni.
